A severe traffic accident occurred on the Highway 307, connecting Cancún and Playa del Carmen, on Thursday afternoon. A dump truck caused a pileup with approximately ten vehicles near the Puerto Morelos Municipal Police station. The accident has so far resulted in one fatality and several injuries.
Initial reports suggest that the dump truck, which was carrying gravel, lost its brakes, leading to a multi-vehicle collision on the Cancún-Playa del Carmen federal highway. This incident occurred around 17:50 hours, under the Puerto Morelos bridge, in the direction of Playa del Carmen.
In response to the accident, emergency and rescue protocols were activated. Paramedics and firefighters from Cancún were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Preliminary information indicates that one person died at the scene, while several others were injured and transported to hospitals in Playa del Carmen and Cancún. As of now, details about the deceased and the injured have not been released by the authorities.
The Puerto Morelos Municipal Police, with the support of the National Guard and experts from the State Prosecutor's Office, have cordoned off the accident area to carry out necessary procedures. The State Civil Protection Coordination announced that the National Guard has detained the dump truck driver and handed him over to the State Attorney General's Office.
Investigations are ongoing, and the central lanes of the highway leading to Playa del Carmen and Cancún remain closed. To alleviate traffic congestion, authorities have kept the side lanes open. However, heavy traffic is being reported towards the municipalities of Playa del Carmen and Cancún. The damaged vehicles, including luxury SUVs, are currently stranded at the entrance to the Municipality of Puerto Morelos.
