Motorcyclist Seriously Injured in Collision with Taxi on Cancún’s López Portillo Avenue

Cancún, Quintana Roo — A 25-year-old motorcyclist suffered serious injuries after colliding with a taxi that turned into his path on José López Portillo Avenue late Monday night.

The accident occurred around midnight near the entrance to the Valle Verde neighborhood, on the city’s outskirts toward Mérida. According to initial reports, the 59-year-old taxi driver was heading out of the city when he made a U-turn to cross opposing lanes and enter the Valle Verde access road.

Witnesses said the taxi driver failed to notice the approaching motorcycle, which then struck the right front side of the vehicle. The impact threw the motorcyclist into the air, sending him over the taxi before he landed on the pavement with severe injuries.

Neighbors rushed to assist the injured rider, who received emergency care from private ambulance paramedics before being transported to a private hospital.

The taxi driver told authorities he was returning home to Valle Verde after work and didn’t see the motorcycle approaching because it was traveling without lights and at excessive speed during a period of light traffic.

Municipal Transit officers detained the taxi driver and turned him over to the State Prosecutor’s Office to determine responsibility for the motorcyclist’s injuries.
