Cancun, Quintana Roo — A 17-year-old motorcyclist died Thursday afternoon after a tractor-trailer allegedly ran a red light and struck his motorcycle in Cancun.
The crash occurred around 5:20 p.m. on Jose Lopez Portillo Avenue near the third entrance to Region 94. Authorities responded to reports of a collision between a federal public service tractor-trailer and a motorcycle.
Preliminary information indicates the red Kenworth Kenmex tractor-trailer was traveling on Jose Lopez Portillo Avenue toward Chac Mool Avenue when it allegedly disregarded a red traffic signal. It struck a white and red Italika DS150 motorcycle that had the right of way on Yaxcaba Street.
Red Cross paramedics arrived at the scene but confirmed the motorcyclist, identified by the initials J.E.C.O., showed no vital signs.
Police detained the 54-year-old tractor-trailer driver, identified as R.A.P., for questioning as authorities determine responsibility.
The State Prosecutor’s Office cordoned off the area to conduct an investigation and remove the body, while security personnel remained on site to complete legal procedures and clear the vehicles.
