Tourist Transport Overturns on Mexican Highway

A truck overturned on the side of the highway with emergency responders at the scene and vehicles passing by.

Playa del Carmen — A calm Sunday morning transformed into an emergency scene on a federal highway after a tourist transport vehicle overturned in a spectacular accident. The incident occurred on the highway connecting Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras.

The vehicle, owned by the Stark travel agency, was en route to Playa del Carmen when the driver lost control. Preliminary investigations point to wet pavement, the presence of puddles, and probable excessive speed as factors that caused the truck to leave the roadway.

The unit then forcefully collided with a high-voltage pole belonging to the Federal Electricity Commission before overturning into roadside undergrowth. The impact knocked down the electrical wiring, which draped over the vehicle and the asphalt, creating an extreme danger for both the occupants and the arriving rescue teams.

Despite the severity of the crash, authorities confirmed there were no fatalities. Several tourists sustained injuries, including one man who was rushed to a hospital for a probable hip fracture.

Personnel from the National Guard, Citizen Security, and Civil Protection cordoned off the area to conduct rescue operations and facilitate the removal of the live cables. The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody by authorities as part of the process to determine responsibility for the incident, which mobilized emergency services on one of the region's busiest thoroughfares.
