Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A detention operation in the Colosio neighborhood ended in chaos and confusion after a Ministerial Police agent accidentally shot himself in the foot during a procedure led by the Quintana Roo Attorney General’s Office (FGE).
The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Avenida 35 and Calle 86, where ministerial officers were attempting to arrest an individual with an outstanding warrant. During the operation, one of the officers mishandled his firearm, causing it to discharge and wound him in the foot.
The accidental gunshot created confusion among the agents, allowing the suspect to flee in a vehicle with the assistance of another individual. However, Municipal Police quickly intervened, intercepting the vehicle several blocks away at Avenida 40 and Calle 86, where they apprehended the suspects.
Reporters arrived at the scene, but ministerial agents declined to provide statements and left without disclosing the injured officer’s condition or whether an internal investigation would be opened into the mishandling of the operation.
The incident has raised concerns about the training and operational protocols of the ministerial police force, exposing a critical lapse that nearly compromised the arrest. The timely response of the Municipal Police prevented the suspect from escaping permanently.
