Toulouse, France — Mexico is set to take a leading role in the 2026 edition of France's Cinelatino Festival, one of the most important gatherings dedicated to Latin American cinema in Europe. The festival's organization confirmed in Paris that its 38th edition, scheduled for March 20 to 29 in Toulouse, will dedicate a portion of its programming to Mexican cinematography.
Mexico, the Central Focus of the Cinelatino Festival
The announcement highlights the presence of the renowned producer Bertha Navarro, an essential figure in national cinema with a career spanning more than six decades and a co-founder of Tequila Gang alongside Guillermo del Toro. The festival underscored her pioneering role in paving the way for new generations of women behind the camera.
The Colmena collective will also be integrated into the programming. This is a group of Mexican filmmakers founded in 2015 that has promoted an innovative and contemporary aesthetic within the audiovisual landscape.
New Generation of Filmmakers and a More Compact Edition
The programming coordinator, Eva Morsch Kihn, emphasized that the combination of a historic figure like Navarro and emerging talents will allow the festival to showcase different ways of making cinema in Mexico.
Due to a challenging economic context, the 2026 edition will reduce its selection to approximately 100 films. However, it will maintain the diversity that characterizes the event, which in 2024 received more than 40,000 visitors.
Finally, in the main competition, films directed by women predominate—a trend that, according to the organization, responds more to artistic sensibility than to a deliberate decision.
