Mexico City — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has pledged that her government will continue supporting Cuba despite pressure from the United States, labeling threats of additional tariffs on countries supplying oil to the island as “unjust.”
During her morning press conference, the president stated that Mexico cannot remain indifferent to the situation facing the Cuban people due to economic sanctions. “The people of Mexico have always been supportive. No one can ignore what Cuba is experiencing because of these unjust sanctions,” she said.
Sheinbaum Calls Sanctions Against Cuba “Unjust”
Sheinbaum reiterated that her administration will continue providing humanitarian aid to the island, as it has historically done with other nations in need. The day before, the Mexican government announced it had sent two vessels carrying over 800 tons of humanitarian aid, primarily food.
Humanitarian Shipments and Diplomatic Efforts for Cuba
Sheinbaum also explained that Mexico is conducting diplomatic efforts to continue sending oil to Cuba without being affected by potential US sanctions or tariffs, urging the United States to reconsider such measures. “One may agree or disagree with the government regime in Cuba, but sanctions should never affect the people. You cannot strangle a people in that way,” the president emphasized, reiterating her call to eliminate restrictions that directly impact the Cuban population.
Energy Crisis and Humanitarian Aid in Cuba
The statements come as Cuba faces a severe energy crisis that has affected key sectors including public services and tourism, one of the country’s main sources of income. Over the weekend, Cuban authorities began closing some hotels and relocating tourists due to power shortages.
Cuba’s access to hydrocarbons worsened after the fall of Nicolás Maduro’s government in Venezuela, its main oil supplier. In this context, Mexico has sought to cover part of that supply, reaffirming its solidarity stance with the island.
