Mexico City, Mexico — Mexico has reinstated an electronic visa system for Brazilian citizens traveling to the country for non-remunerated activities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) announced.

The system allows travelers to apply entirely online, but only for single-entry arrivals by air; re-entries are not permitted. Authorities said the electronic visa facilitates tourism and business travel while supporting orderly mobility between the two nations.

“The system also marks a milestone in modernizing public services in Mexico, being the first 100% digital procedure conducted abroad,” the ministry stated. “It directly contributes to strengthening the efficiency and modernization of Mexican consular services.”

According to SRE data, from January to November last year, Mexican consulates in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo issued 12,636 visas. In Rio de Janeiro, consular staff reported granting visas in only 53% of cases where applicants attended interviews, primarily because applicants failed to meet established requirements or submitted incomplete documentation.

Between February 2004 and November 2021, Mexico did not require visas for Brazilian citizens. However, the requirement was reinstated on December 11, 2021, after the visa exemption was exploited for migration to the United States.

The Foreign Ministry clarified that interested travelers can still apply for visas through traditional channels at Mexican consulates abroad. “The electronic visa does not replace the consular visa,” officials explained. “Brazilian nationals can continue to apply normally for visitor visas without permission to perform remunerated activities at any Mexican consular representation abroad, which allows multiple entries, with validity of up to 180 days or up to 10 years, and is necessary for entering national territory by sea or land.”
