Mexico City — Netflix has acquired the global streaming rights to “Soy Frankelda,” the first Mexican feature film made using stop-motion animation, the company announced. The film will join the platform’s catalog in 2026.

Directed by brothers Arturo and Roy Ambriz through their production studio Cinema Fantasma, the project received artistic mentorship from acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. Del Toro, who directed the stop-motion “Pinocchio,” praised the film as a “milestone in Mexican stop-motion animation and a true triumph of vision, tenacity, and love for the craft.”

“Soy Frankelda” follows a 19th-century young woman named Frankelda who dreams of becoming a writer. She creates fantastical creatures inspired by Mexican folklore, but after experiencing deep trauma, she must journey into her own subconscious to confront monsters that blur the lines between imagination and reality.

The film performed strongly in Mexican theaters last year, becoming one of the highest-grossing domestic productions in the independent circuit. It also earned a nomination for Best Independent Feature at the 53rd Annie Awards, a major recognition in the animation industry.

Netflix’s acquisition comes as the streaming service strengthens its presence in Mexico, following recent meetings between federal officials and company executives at its new offices in the capital.
