Mexico City — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has launched a contest that will allow one young woman from across the country to use her presidential ticket for the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Mexico City’s Estadio Ciudad de México.
During her morning press conference at the National Palace, Sheinbaum announced the “Represent Mexico at the World Cup Opening” contest. The winner will occupy the seat reserved for the head of the executive branch, identified as ticket number 00001.
Contest Details
The competition is open to women nationwide aged 16 to 25. Participants must submit a video, no longer than one minute, demonstrating their technical soccer skills through ball control (juggle).
Registration opens on Monday, March 9, and closes on April 10 through the digital platform mundialsocial.gob.mx.
A panel of experts from sports and media will select the winner. The committee includes professional soccer player Charlyn Corral, international referee Katia Itzel García, and sports journalist Gabriela Fernández.
Purpose of the Initiative
The contest is part of the “Social World Cup” program, which aims to promote gender equity in sports and encourage physical activity among Mexican youth.
Sheinbaum said the initiative seeks to ensure the start of the World Cup—which will feature Mexico versus South Africa—includes direct citizen representation from the country’s new generation of women.
