San Miguel de Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The Mexican Navy, through the Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR), has announced the activation of Plan Marina to address the atypical surge of sargassum washing ashore in Playa del Carmen. The initiative aims to mitigate the environmental and economic impacts of the seaweed influx along the coastline.
Deployment of Naval Resources
Under the Sargassum Attention Strategy, the Cozumel Naval Sector will deploy 250 personnel, including admirals, captains, officers, and enlisted sailors. The operation will utilize two specialized sargassum-collecting vessels, smaller boats, and containment barriers to maintain clean beaches and reduce ecological damage.
Affected Areas
The most severely impacted stretch spans from Punta Venado to Punta Maroma, with significant accumulations reported at public beaches such as Plaza Fundadores, Playa 88, and El Recodo. Tourist resorts in Playacar and Mayakoba have also been affected.
Environmental and Economic Concerns
The alarming concentration of sargassum poses threats to coastal ecosystems, tourism, local economies, and public health. The Navy emphasized that this effort falls under Plan Marina’s social responsibility component, reinforcing its institutional commitment to environmental protection and community support.
The Secretariat of the Navy reiterated its dedication to safeguarding marine environments and assisting coastal populations, particularly in crises that jeopardize public safety and stability.
