Santa Clara, California — The Seattle Seahawks won Super Bowl LX, defeating the New England Patriots, and the Mexican flag flew on the field at Levi’s Stadium in the hands of tight end Elijah Arroyo.
Arroyo, who has Mexican ancestry through his father, was born in Palmetto Bay, Florida, but moved to Mexico with his family at age seven due to his father’s work. He spent his childhood in Cancún, Quintana Roo, where he attended elementary school and learned sports values playing American football and soccer.
He returned to the United States at 13, but his time in Mexico left a lasting impression. “I adopted the national colors after spending seven years of my childhood in Cancún,” Arroyo said, explaining his decision to proudly wave the Mexican flag after the championship game.
Arroyo played college football for the Miami Hurricanes, where he helped the team become the second-best in the Atlantic Coast Conference. This performance led to his selection in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft by the Seahawks.
In his rookie season, he recorded 15 receptions for 179 yards and one touchdown. Although he suffered an injury in Week 14, he recovered in time to play in the Super Bowl.
