Mérida Ranks Among Mexico’s Safest Cities with No Homicides or Femicides in January

Mérida, Yucatán — Mérida has maintained its status as one of Mexico’s safest cities, ranking as the third safest capital city in the country with no homicides or femicides reported in January 2026, according to new government data.

The Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP) released its “Criminal Incidence January 2026” report covering all 32 state capitals. The data shows Mérida had a crime incidence rate of 24.4 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants, placing it third among capital cities with the lowest crime rates. This is significantly lower than the national average of 72.2 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants.

While Mérida saw a 37.9% annual increase in total cases compared to January 2025 — rising from 195 to 269 incidents — this growth contrasts with a national decrease of 4.7%. Mérida ranked 32nd for the smallest annual increase in crime numbers.

Zero Homicides and Femicides

Mérida reported no intentional homicides in January, earning it the top position as the capital city with the lowest incidence of this crime. The national homicide rate was one offense per 100,000 inhabitants.

Similarly, the city recorded no femicides, achieving a crime incidence rate of zero offenses per 100,000 women. This also places Mérida first among capital cities for lowest femicide incidence, compared to a national rate of 0.1 offenses per 100,000 women.

Property Crime Rates

For pedestrian robbery, Mérida had a rate of 0.3 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants, ranking ninth among capital cities with the lowest incidence. The national average was 2.9 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants.

In motor vehicle theft, Mérida recorded 0.3 offenses per 100,000 vehicles, securing the top position as the capital city with the lowest incidence. The national rate was significantly higher at 14.2 offenses per 100,000 vehicles.
