Dispute Over Maya Train Project Resolved Through Mediation

The National Institute of Indigenous Peoples (INPI) in Quintana Roo, Mexico, has stepped in to mediate a growing dispute between local communities and the developers of the Maya Train project. This move comes in response to protests from residents living along the proposed route of the project.

INPI's role will be to facilitate dialogue between the residents and the project's institutions, with the aim of reaching agreements that prevent further disruptive demonstrations. Venancia Coh Chuc, the head of INPI, emphasized their commitment to open dialogue. She stated, "We listen to the community's voice and convey it to those in charge to generate proposals and agreements."

The main concerns of the communities revolve around the impact of construction on their daily lives. Issues include the destruction of roads and the heavy traffic from construction vehicles, which has disrupted local circulation and led to accidents. There have also been complaints about delays in the project's progress.

To address these concerns, INPI plans to hold public consultation forums in 2025. The intention is to involve a larger number of people in the creation of secondary laws related to the project.
