Mayor’s Negligence Puts Town at Risk: Will Morena Survive?

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, a municipality in Quintana Roo, is in dire need of strong leadership. The current mayor, Maricarmen Hernandez Solis, has repeatedly shown her inability to govern effectively. Her administration is characterized by negligence, corruption, and superficiality, which has led to a significant drain on municipal resources and public discontent. If she does not step down, her actions could jeopardize MORENA's chances in the upcoming 2027 municipal, state, and federal elections.

On October 20th, Municipal Police Commander, Samuel Moo Tah, was tragically assassinated. While returning home from his shift, Moo Tah was ambushed and killed by armed men. This was not a mere "death," as Mayor Solis described it, but a targeted assassination by organized crime. The incident reflects the municipal government's failure to implement effective strategies to protect its citizens.

Mayor Solis's appointment of Teresa Emigdio Antunez as the director of the Municipal Police, Traffic, and Firefighters has further exacerbated the situation. Antunez lacks the necessary qualifications and experience for this role, and she does not even have a permit to carry a service weapon. Her appointment has caused significant discontent within the police force.

Since assuming her position on September 30th, Antunez has repeatedly neglected her duties due to health issues. Her absence has hindered the police force's ability to carry out their responsibilities, which directly affects the safety and security of the municipality's citizens.

The murder of Commander Moo Tah is a stark example of the leadership's failure. Despite his involvement in several operations against the two main drug trafficking gangs in the municipality, Moo Tah was not provided with adequate security protocols. Both Mayor Solis and Director Antunez bear responsibility for this tragic incident.

The police force has called on Mayor Solis to remove Antunez from her position to prevent the institution from falling into an irreversible crisis. However, the issues extend beyond the police force. Officers are often assigned to perform household chores at the private residences of the mayor's relatives and friends, and they are not provided with adequate resources for their patrol duties.

The entire population of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, including the municipal seat and the dozens of towns within the municipality, is suffering from the lack of public safety. The escalating insecurity in the region has led to an increase in vigilante justice, as evidenced by several recent incidents. The mayor's failure to provide security for the people has left them in a state of vulnerability and fear.
