Quintana Roo, Mexico — The Maya Train has transported more than 1.6 million passengers in Quintana Roo during its first two years of operation, with ridership doubling in 2025.

Statistics show that of the total passenger movements recorded in 2024 and 2025, over 1.5 million were domestic travelers and the remaining 135,000 were international visitors.

In 2024, the train recorded more than 524,000 passengers. Last year, ridership more than doubled to over 1.12 million travelers on routes covering approximately 600 kilometers of track connecting 12 stations across the Mexican Caribbean state.

The Maya Train stations in Quintana Roo are located in Nuevo Xcán, Leona Vicario, Cancún Airport, Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Tulum Airport, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Limones-Chacchoben, Bacalar, Chetumal Airport, and Nicolás Bravo-Kohunlich.

The train connects the states of Tabasco, Campeche, Chiapas, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo across the Yucatan Peninsula. Along the route, authorities established nine protected natural areas and 57 conservation zones covering more than 1.39 million hectares, aiming to protect nature while promoting sustainable tourism.

The Maya Train fleet consists of 42 trains manufactured in Mexico, with exterior designs inspired by ancient Mayan culture and the majesty of the jaguar, an endemic animal of southeastern Mexico.

Additionally, construction began last year on the Maya Train’s freight rail component, which will feature intermodal terminals in Poxilá and Progreso in Yucatán; Cancún and Chetumal in Quintana Roo; and Palenque in Chiapas, serving as a connection to the Interoceanic Train.

The freight system will include 10 cargo complexes with five intermodal terminals: Poxilá, Progreso, Cancún, Palenque, and Chetumal; four operational yards; and a fuel spur interconnected through the railway network.
