Fugitive Wanted for Homicide Captured in Cancún After Police Clash

A man is being held by police officers in front of a police station in Quintana Roo, Mexico, with the officers facing away from the camera.

Cancún, Mexico — In an unexpected turn of events during a routine operation, the Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC) apprehended Agustín "N," an individual who, in addition to facing charges for disobedience and resisting arrest, was found to have an outstanding arrest warrant for the crime of aggravated homicide. The warrant was issued over a decade ago in the state of Chiapas.

The incident began when SSC officers were conducting preventive patrols on the Cancún-Tulum highway. At one point, the agents observed a man who, suddenly and without taking the necessary precautions, launched himself across the road, jeopardizing his own physical safety and that of the drivers in the area.

Faced with this situation, the police were forced to perform an evasive maneuver to avoid hitting the pedestrian, who, after reaching the other side of the highway, proceeded to a nearby bus stop. Concerned for the citizen's welfare, the officers decided to approach him to offer assistance and verify his condition.

However, upon attempting to communicate with the subject, he reacted in an aggressive and hostile manner, hurling insults and threats at the uniformed officers. Immediately afterward, Agustín "N" attempted to physically assault the police officers, delivering blows and shoves in an effort to avoid detention.

Given the individual's resistance, the SSC agents found it necessary to use the minimum indispensable force to subdue him and ensure his physical safety. Once he was under control, the police proceeded with a routine check and verified Agustín "N"'s details in the database of the Control, Command, Communication, and Computing Center (C5).

It was at that moment the surprise emerged: Agustín "N" had an active arrest warrant for the crime of aggravated homicide, issued on October 3, 2011, by the then-Attorney General's Office of the state of Chiapas.

Confronted with this discovery, the SSC elements proceeded to transfer Agustín "N" to the facilities of the State Attorney General's Office, where he was turned over to the competent authorities so that the corresponding investigations could be initiated and his legal situation determined.
