Cancún, Quintana Roo — A man was shot in the leg in Cancún on Sunday afternoon and drove himself to the hospital for treatment, prompting a police investigation into an alleged robbery attempt.
The victim, a 38-year-old resident of the Ikal neighborhood in Supermanzana 260, arrived at the emergency room of Hospital General around 4 p.m. on Sunday after being wounded. Preliminary reports indicate he was shot during an altercation near his home.
Police officers from the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit responded to the hospital after receiving a report of a gunshot victim. Authorities said the man arrived under his own power without requesting immediate assistance at the scene of the attack.
Initial accounts suggest the victim was intercepted by two individuals on a motorcycle as he approached his residence. After a confrontation, one of the assailants shot him in the leg before both fled the scene.
Police gathered information at the hospital and launched patrols in the surrounding area, focusing on the Prado Norte neighborhood in search of the suspects.
During the investigation, authorities heard accounts suggesting the shooting occurred during a struggle after the assailants attempted to rob the victim.
The State Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into the shooting and is pursuing charges for injuries with a firearm.
