Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A man was shot in the ankle at the Congo bar Wednesday night, and the gunman fled on foot, according to witnesses. The victim is believed to be the bar’s manager.

The shooting occurred around 10 p.m. at the intersection of Avenidas 115 and Solidaridad, an area known as Punto 115 that is lined with bars and restaurants.

Preliminary reports indicate the gunman entered the bar, fired at the victim, and struck him in the ankle. The shot caused panic among patrons.

Witnesses said the attacker walked away calmly, holding the pistol. Police arrived and launched a search operation but apparently did not apprehend the suspect.

The injured man was taken to a hospital for treatment. Investigators from the State Prosecutor’s Office arrived at the scene to gather evidence and begin an investigation.
