Cancún, Mexico — A man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for raping an 8-year-old girl in Cancún, the State Prosecutor’s Office announced.
Juan Carlos Vázquez Pérez received the sentence after prosecutors presented evidence linking him to the assault, which occurred on January 22, 2024, at the victim’s home in the Tierra Maya neighborhood.
The girl, whose identity remains protected, was eight years old at the time. According to authorities, Vázquez Pérez later assaulted her again in a school bathroom, threatening to do “horrible things” if she told anyone.
In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered Vázquez Pérez to pay a fine of 321,220 pesos and provide compensation to the victim.
In a separate case in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, another man, Edgar Pascual, has been charged in connection with the alleged rape of a six-year-old girl starting in August 2017. Authorities say he exploited his familial relationship with the victim and threatened her to keep silent.
A judge has ordered Pascual held in preventive detention while the judicial process continues.
