Chetumal, Quintana Roo — A man has been sentenced to 15 years and six months in prison for distributing intimate videos of his ex-partner without her consent, in a case authorities are calling a landmark ruling against digital violence.

The State Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the conviction of Roger Armando Marín Uc, found guilty of digital violence, extortion, and other crimes against his former partner. The case began when the victim initiated legal proceedings to establish paternity and secure child support payments for their two children.

Instead of complying with his legal obligations, Marín Uc threatened to release privately recorded material to pressure her into dropping the case. When she refused, he followed through, sharing the videos on social media and with people in their social circle.

The situation escalated when he warned he would take the material to schools and daycare centers, aiming to publicly expose the victim and cause irreparable harm to her personal and social life.

After reviewing the evidence, a judge imposed the prison sentence, which also includes fines exceeding 65,000 pesos (approximately $3,250 USD) and 52,500 pesos ($2,625 USD) in moral damages to the victim, acknowledging the emotional and social impact of the crimes.

State officials said the resolution represents significant progress in combating digital violence and protecting privacy, particularly in cases where intimate material is used for control, coercion, or retaliation.

The case is considered a historic precedent in Quintana Roo, sending a message that such conduct will not go unpunished and that victims have institutional support to come forward.
