Tulum, Mexico — The security crisis impacting Tulum was once again exposed on Sunday afternoon when a man approximately 35 years old was shot and killed inside the renowned Rosa Negra restaurant, located in the municipality's hotel zone. This incident follows the fatal shooting of another man last Friday in the Yaax Tulum neighborhood.
According to initial reports, the victim sustained at least three gunshot wounds: one in the left side of his back, another in his thorax, and one more in his abdomen. Paramedics arrived at the scene but could only confirm his death.
Witnesses indicated that the assailant was dressed entirely in black and fired at point-blank range before fleeing the site without a trace. The executed man was known in the area for his alleged involvement in drug dealing activities, reinforcing the hypothesis of a settling of scores between criminal groups operating in the tourist destination.
Personnel from the Municipal Police and the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) carried out the evidence collection and secured the scene, while investigations continue to identify the responsible party.
This new crime deepens the crisis of violence facing the municipality, exposing the inability of Mayor Diego Castañón to contain the wave of crime that has kept residents and tourists on edge. The level of impunity has escalated to the point where attacks now occur in exclusive zones, inside one of Tulum's most recognized restaurants.
With this homicide, Tulum reaches a staggering total of 48 murders so far this year, and 223 since Diego Castañón assumed the municipal presidency following the death of Marciano Dzul Caamal, a position to which he was formally elected just last year.
