Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A significant influx of sargassum seaweed has washed ashore on beaches in this popular tourist destination, particularly affecting the fiscal pier area and Playacar, where cleanup crews are working to contain the accumulation.
Personnel from the Mexican Navy and the Federal Maritime-Terrestrial Zone have deployed a large-scale operation that includes offshore collection using a specialized sargassum vessel, along with manual cleanup efforts along the shoreline.
The phenomenon, which intensifies during this time of year, impacts the area’s tourism image and requires constant cleanup work along the coast.
Offshore, the sargassum vessel works to collect the seaweed before it reaches the coast, while on land, crews perform manual labor to remove sargassum that has accumulated on the sand.
Although sargassum is a natural phenomenon, its accumulation creates foul odors as it decomposes and can affect recreational activities.
Authorities are maintaining cleanup operations on a permanent basis while awaiting sea conditions that will determine the intensity of future arrivals.
