Cancún, Quintana Roo — Magaly Achach Solís, who made history as the first female mayor of Cancún, has died at age 71, her family announced Friday.
Her daughter, Candy Ayuso Achach, confirmed the death in a social media post, writing: “With profound sadness we share the news of the passing of our beloved mother… We ask for respect, understanding, and privacy for the family at this time.” The family said details about funeral arrangements would be announced later.
A Historic Political Career
Achach Solís’s tenure as mayor of Benito Juárez municipality, which includes Cancún, established her as a pioneering figure for women in Quintana Roo politics. Her administration is remembered as a significant period in the city’s development and opened doors for subsequent generations of women in regional government.
Those who knew her highlighted both her institutional leadership and personal qualities. Her family described her as a loving mother and a fundamental figure in Cancún’s social and political life.
Months of Health Struggles
The news followed months of concern about Achach Solís’s health. She was hospitalized urgently on September 15, 2025, raising alarms among political figures and residents. Three days later, her daughter appealed on social media for blood donors due to the former official’s critical condition, sparking an outpouring of support across Quintana Roo society.
Her health continued to deteriorate over the following months, with many following her condition closely.
Reactions and Legacy
The death of Cancún’s first female mayor has prompted condolences across social media from politicians, former officials, and residents, who have recognized her contributions to the municipality’s history and institutional development.
Her passing leaves a void in Cancún’s collective memory but also a legacy that transcends her time in office: demonstrating at a crucial moment for the city that women could and should occupy decision-making roles in public life.
