Cancún, QR — A significant LP gas explosion has resulted in three damaged homes and four injured individuals. Cancún firefighters were dispatched to an address in SM 51 on Saturday following reports of the blast.
The explosion was reported around 6:00 a.m. by neighbors. Residents in the area, located blocks from the explosion site, also reported hearing it. The force of the explosion was powerful enough to destroy the entire lower floor of a building, which comprises the entire structure. Three units within that building were severely damaged by the blast.
According to initial reports, an accumulation of LP gas on the first floor is believed to be responsible for the massive eruption. The explosion also caused significant damage to units on the second and third floors.
Area residents called emergency services after hearing the explosion and subsequently seeing a column of dust and debris flying into the air. The residential street was left strewn with concrete bricks, metal, and broken glass from the explosion.
Emergency responders cordoned off the area while assisting four people, including Gilberto V., 70, and Grecia L., 57, the homeowners, who sustained only minor injuries. Two other people were injured by debris from the gas explosion.
A man passing through the area at the time of the explosion saw his vehicle struck by debris. A car was damaged and the driver was injured while driving through the zone at the moment of the explosion. He was treated at the scene for minor injuries. His vehicle suffered at least one broken window.
The fourth injured person is a young man who also lives in the area. The powerful blast blew kitchen cabinets off the walls of a second-floor unit. A third-floor unit suffered cracked walls and broken windows.
According to officials from Civil Protection, the explosion was caused by an LP gas leak in the first-floor kitchen gas line. Civil Protection ultimately determined that the main house was uninhabitable.
