Chetumal, Quintana Roo — Veteran politician Pedro Flota Alcocer has suspended his membership in Mexico’s Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) after more than 40 years, citing ethical disagreements with recent party decisions.
Flota announced his decision in a letter shared on social media, addressed to Cora Amalia Castilla Madrid, president of the PRI in Quintana Roo. He clarified that his departure is not a move to another political party but a personal stance against what he described as damaging institutional decisions.
“I want to be consistent, and I cannot share decisions that have already been made,” Flota wrote. “I believe it is very disloyal to be inside and murmur; it is better to do it openly, even though it hurts me so much… but that’s how it is.”
In his letter, Flota stated he was suspending his membership because he could not support actions he considered harmful to the party’s institutional life. He referenced the upcoming installation of a new municipal leadership in Tulum as an example, saying it would come “by trampling figures, rights, and above all the futures of Tulum militants who will see arrive someone who fought them, humiliated them, and shamed them with their behavior.”
Flota has held numerous positions within the PRI over four decades, including leadership roles in youth organizations, several secretariats within the State Executive Committee, presidency of the Municipal Committee of Othón P. Blanco, and two terms as president of the State Executive Committee.
He emphasized that the PRI “has been my home and in my heart it will continue to be,” and that he is not leaving for another political affiliation. However, he stated he could no longer remain a member while disagreeing with the party’s direction.
“It is not my purpose to modify decisions or styles of proceeding; the decisions have already been made,” Flota added. “I just cannot accompany and validate the course that is projected.”
