Cancún, Quintana Roo — LGBTQ+ groups in Quintana Roo are working to secure political representation through diversity quotas for the state’s upcoming elections in June 2027.
Linger Mendez, founder of Cancún Pride, emphasized the importance of candidates for diversity quotas demonstrating a proven track record of activism. She explained that diversity quotas are mandatory electoral mechanisms designed to ensure historically underrepresented or discriminated groups have effective participation in candidate lists and public office.
“Initially they focused on gender parity, but currently diversity quotas encompass various vulnerable sectors, such as Indigenous and Afro-Mexican communities, people with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQ+ community,” Mendez said.
She noted that through these groups, they are analyzing the process with the Quintana Roo Electoral Institute to determine how it will be structured and substantiated, and what work each representative from these population sectors has done.
Mendez clarified that for the sexual diversity community, they seek candidates who genuinely have activism and can demonstrate it. She recalled that in the past, this rule has not been respected, resulting in candidates being chosen without prior work.
The upcoming elections will take place in June 2027, with the goal of seeing the first legislator emerge from the ranks of collectives. This would help highlight the demands, proposals, and issues of this sector, historically excluded and vulnerable due to sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.
LGBTIQ+ Parliament Operating for Four Years
The Parliament for Sexual and Gender Diversity in Quintana Roo (LGBTIQ+ Parliament) is a political and social representation space established in the state. Its purpose is to provide an analysis and expression platform for LGBTQ+ community members, especially youth, to present proposals aimed at improving the legal framework.
Mendez explained that the LGBTQ+ parliaments in the state were created four years ago and now have 10 representatives from each municipality.
