Massive Labor Day Rally Unites Cancun Workers

On May 1st, Labor Day, 15 trade union groups gathered in a massive demonstration at the Plaza de la Reforma, Cancun. The event took place in front of the municipal palace of Benito Juarez. The union leaders emphasized several key issues including women's rights, the need for decent housing, a reduction in working hours, and improved healthcare.

Mario Machuca Sánchez, Secretary General of the Revolutionary Confederation of Workers and Peasants (CROC) in Benito Juarez, argued for a 40-hour work week. He stated that this would allow for better family life and productivity, benefiting both workers and companies. He also emphasized the need for unity among workers to address common problems.

Sánchez noted that the unity of these organizations should not only be for demonstrations but also for participating in dialogue tables. He said, "This alliance emerges as an idea of solidarity to the labor movement, we are all workers and we are the ones who have built Cancun, the state, and the country. Long live the labor movement!"

Sánchez also highlighted that this gathering was a reflection of a national trend where trade union organizations are coming together to dialogue with the government about their concerns. He said that while some requests have been addressed, others are still being discussed.

The demonstration also included the signing of a historic agreement for the unity of labor organizations. The aim is to address issues that particularly affect them and to always seek the benefit of all unions. They acknowledged that while incomes have improved, purchasing power has not kept pace, and there is a need to continue striving for a balance.

Two other marches took place alongside this demonstration. One was by the Confederation of Workers of Mexico (CTM), whose representative was also at the Plaza de la Reforma, and the other by the Federation of Workers' Organizations of Quintana Roo. Both groups joined the demonstration, filling the esplanade completely.

Isidro Santamaría Casanova, Secretary General of the CTM in Quintana Roo, stated that much needs to be done for the labor sector. He emphasized the need for better representation in chambers and councils, and for more and better housing, healthcare, and security.
