Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — The Janal Pixan 2025 festival, titled "Pixano ob sáasilo 'ob. Finados seres de luz" (Deceased Beings of Light), commenced Thursday evening at the Plaza 28 de Julio with a massive attendance of local residents and tourists. The event featured a brilliant exhibition of "Los Altares de México" and performances by artists at the amphitheater.

A highlight of the evening was the Magno Altar, created through the contributions of hundreds of municipal government workers under the administration of Mayor Estefanía Mercado. The altar was applauded by residents and visitors, who took commemorative selfies with it.

The ceremony's commencement was marked by the placement of the principal offering by the honorary president of DIF Playa del Carmen, Eduardo Asencio; the director general of the Institute of Culture and the Arts, Ernesto Martínez Cuéllar; and the secretary of Social Justice and Citizen Participation, Deyanira Martínez. The opening also included traditional prayers by "rezadoras" and a performance by the Voladores de Papantla.

Surrounding the plaza, "Los Altares de México" displayed offerings representing the states of Yucatán, Morelos, Veracruz, Campeche, San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato, Mexico City, Tamaulipas, Nayarit, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Tabasco, Nuevo León, Michoacán, Chihuahua, Guerrero, Aguascalientes, Puebla, Jalisco, and Zacatecas.

Authorities, led by the municipal secretary general, Luis Herrera Quiam, and the chief of staff, Arturo Castro Duarte, accompanied by the state director of culture, Lilian Villanueva, toured each of the altars. Representatives from various municipal secretariats and departments provided explanations of their creation.

The thousands of attendees enjoyed a pet costume contest titled "Pixan Peek." The first-place winner received 20,000 pesos, while the second and third-place winners will be awarded 15,000 and 10,000 pesos, respectively, in a ceremony to be held this coming Sunday.

The Municipal Institute of Culture and the Arts of Playa del Carmen presented 19 artists at the amphitheater, with nearly 400 performers scheduled for the entire celebration. Notable acts included the Mariachi femenil Azul Turquesa, a mini-musical based on the film "Coco," Cabreras Flamenco, Sac Bé, Kiim Wac, Lol Bé, and the Academia Play@.

Simultaneously, a celebration was held at the Puerto Aventuras town hall esplanade, featuring a concert by students from the Casa de Música, a dance and singing performance, and a "Sabores Penínsulares Pib" gastronomic sample.

The government of Mayor Estefanía Mercado invited all local families and visitors, dressed in white, to participate in the parade "U Ximbal 'ob. Paseo de los Pixanes" (The Walk of the Spirits). The parade will depart from Lázaro Cárdenas Park to the municipal cemetery beginning at 6:00 PM on Saturday, November 1.
