Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Isla Mujeres has become the first municipality in Quintana Roo to launch an official diving guide, a manual designed to promote sustainable underwater tourism and conserve marine ecosystems.
The guide was presented by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, along with members of the Association of Divers of Isla Mujeres and representatives of the local maritime sector. The municipal government said the manual aims to diversify the island’s tourism offerings and strengthen activities linked to local identity.
The guide includes maps and descriptions of dive sites, safety measures and maritime regulations, a directory of nautical services and sustainable experiences, and promotional strategies for national and international markets. It also responds to a longstanding demand from local divers, captains and instructors to preserve the island’s nautical tradition.
In a statement, Gómez said the guide strengthens the promotion of Isla Mujeres as a dive destination and encourages responsible diving practices. She credited the coordinated work of the divers association and the local maritime sector for making the initiative possible, saying it supports a tourism model that goes beyond the traditional sun-and-beach concept.
Through the guide, the municipality aims to form alliances with tourism authorities and service providers to draw a specialized, high-value sustainable travel segment and boost the local economy, officials said.
