Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo — Municipal authorities, conservation organizations, and fishing cooperatives have presented new projects aimed at protecting sharks and promoting sustainable development in the Mexican Caribbean.
Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde led a working meeting with representatives from Saving Our Sharks and the Patria y Progreso Kab Xok fishing cooperative to review initiatives focused on shark conservation and building a sustainable development model for Isla Mujeres.
The meeting highlighted that the Yucatan Peninsula region is home to more than 85 shark species, underscoring the area’s ecological importance and the need for coordinated conservation efforts.
Presented projects include strengthening the Shark Safari program, developing community tourism schemes, transitioning former fishermen to sustainable activities, and proposing a shark and ray sanctuary in the Mexican Caribbean, planned for 2026.
Participants included José Luis Funes Izaguirre, head of PROFEPA in Quintana Roo; Luis Lombardo, Raziel Rivero Coba, Pamela Vázquez, and Melodie Treviño from Saving Our Sharks; and Eyder Jahil Hoth Pérez, general director of Economic Development and Tourism.
