Isla Mujeres, Mexico — The 20th edition of the International Fishing Tournament "Cosme Alberto Martínez Magaña" is set to take place in Isla Mujeres from May 23 to 25, with organizers anticipating record participation and solidifying its status as one of the most significant sporting events in the Mexican Caribbean.

Historic Prize Pool and Competition Details

During a press conference, Héctor Gil, Director of Fishing, and Hernán Magaña, Director of Economic Development and Tourism, announced that this year’s tournament will feature a historic prize pool of 850,000 pesos (approximately $50,000 USD). The distribution of awards is as follows:

  • First place: 350,000 pesos
  • Second place: 235,000 pesos
  • Third place: 130,000 pesos
  • Fourth place: 55,000 pesos
  • Fifth place: 45,000 pesos
  • Sixth place: 30,000 pesos
  • Seventh place: 20,000 pesos

Additional surprise prizes will also be awarded during the event.

The tournament will kick off on Thursday, May 23, with the traditional captains' dinner at 7:00 p.m., where final registration will be available and competition details will be shared. Fishing activities will take place on May 24 and 25, with organizers expecting favorable weather conditions, as has been the case in previous editions.

Promoting Tourism and Conservation

The event was recently promoted at the Tianguis Turístico in Baja California, a key platform for positioning Isla Mujeres as an international destination for both sports and tourism. Hernán Magaña emphasized that the tournament aligns with a broader strategy to promote responsible tourism.

"This tournament, one of the oldest and most recognized in the state, follows the catch-and-release trend, protecting marine species by capturing and releasing them afterward," Magaña explained.

He also highlighted the economic impact of the event, which drives high hotel occupancy—approximately 11,000 rooms available across the continental and island zones—and generates significant revenue for local businesses, restaurants, and service providers.

Business Opportunities and Future Events

During the Tianguis Turístico, Isla Mujeres secured over 80 business meetings, double the initial target, with wholesalers and tour operators expressing interest not only in the fishing tournament but also in the destination as a whole.

"It’s a place that has it all: natural beauty, top-tier hotel offerings, quality services, and a year-round calendar of events," Magaña added.

Upcoming activities highlighted during the conference included celebrations for the founding of Isla Mujeres, Day of the Dead festivities, and religious and year-end events, which consistently attract both domestic and international visitors.

Registration and Invitation

Registration for the tournament is open at Isla Mujeres’ tourism offices until May 23. Organizers extended an invitation for participants and families to enjoy the event, emphasizing that the competition is not just a sporting event but also a celebration of the island’s culture and hospitality.

"We welcome you with open arms. Come to compete, to enjoy Isla Mujeres, and to be part of an experience that combines sport, nature, and tradition," officials concluded.

The tournament is expected to draw anglers from across Mexico and beyond, further cementing Isla Mujeres’ reputation as a premier destination for sport fishing and eco-tourism.
