Isla Mujeres, Mexico — The Government of Isla Mujeres, led by Mayor Atenea Gómez Ricalde, has enthusiastically inaugurated the First Isla Mujeres Basketball Cup, a historic event that sets a precedent for promoting sports and healthy coexistence on the island. The ceremony was held at the "José del Carmen Pastrana" court in the Colonia Centro neighborhood, where families, players, and municipal authorities gathered to kick off the sporting event.
The First Basketball Cup featured the participation of 15 teams across five categories: Micro, Infantil Varonil (Boys' Youth), Pasarela Varonil (Boys' Showcase), Cadetes Femenil (Girls' Cadets), and Cadetes Varonil (Boys' Cadets). The teams hail from the municipalities of Isla Mujeres, Benito Juárez, Lázaro Cárdenas, Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Morelos.
Representative teams participating in the competition include the Mantarrayas, Estrellas, Marlins, Sirenas, Caimanes, Panthers, Halcones, Tritones, Guardianes SP LC, Shooters Negro Playa, Cachorros LC, Club La Raza, Deers Cancún, Zacil-Ha LC, and Escorpiones.
A festive and excited atmosphere marked the inauguration. The teams paraded in front of the attendees, receiving applause from parents, friends, and fans who came to show their support. With the official oath, the players reaffirmed their commitment to compete with dedication, respect, and camaraderie.
The presidium included the Director General of Youth, Culture, and Sport, Rosa Elena Ríos Fernández, and the Director of Sports, Fernando Bacelis Godoy.
Also present was Armando Castillo Montejo, President of the LIMFOBA League, State Basketball Coordinator for INDET Quintana Roo, and President of the State Association of Sports Journalists. He recognized the effort of the Isla Mujeres municipality to open spaces for participation and development for children and young people.
This tournament is part of the actions promoted by Atenea Gómez aimed at building a healthier, more inclusive municipality with opportunities for all.
