Mérida, Yucatán — Mérida Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada led the inauguration of the Habanero Chile Fair, an event designed to boost local and regional consumption while strengthening the economy of producers through a framework of social justice. The fair, held at Los Portales-Correos walkway and Eulogio Rosado Park, features over 40 vendors offering traditional dishes, workshops, and culinary exhibitions showcasing Yucatán’s gastronomic richness.
"PicaFeria": Bridging Producers and Consumers
During her remarks, Mayor Patrón Laviada emphasized that initiatives like the "PicaFeria" aim to solidify trust between producers and consumers.
“This is what strengthens our economy: the certainty that in Mérida, we work with transparency and sustainability,” she stated.
This marks the fair’s first edition in Mérida and will remain open this weekend, operating Saturday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday, July 20, from 11 a.m. until the last visitor departs.
Direct Support for Regional Economy Without Intermediaries
The mayor highlighted the city’s commitment to supporting local producers by providing direct and secure spaces for sales without intermediaries.
“We seek higher incomes and commercial opportunities that improve the quality of life for producer families,” she noted.
Beyond product sales, the fair includes live music, artistic performances, and family-friendly workshops, fostering community engagement and revitalizing the Historic Center.
“We are positively reactivating Eulogio Rosado Park and its surroundings, bringing culture closer to everyone,” the mayor added.
Celebrating 15 Years of Habanero’s Designation of Origin
The Habanero Chile Fair coincides with the 15th anniversary of the habanero’s designation of origin. The event is organized by the Gastronomic Circuit of the Yucatán Peninsula (CIGAPEY) with support from Mérida’s City Council and the Historic Center Trust.
Participating collectives include Namar Mil and Molmeyac, brands specializing in habanero-based sauces and condiments, which also work to preserve the Mayan milpa as part of the region’s agricultural heritage.
The fair offers a unique opportunity for local producers and visitors to celebrate Yucatán’s culinary and cultural legacy.
