Digital Violence Against Women Goes Unchecked in Mexican Municipality

José María Morelos, Quintana Roo – In José María Morelos, digital violence against women has become normalized on social media, particularly on Facebook, where degrading posts that expose them under accusations of alleged “indecorous” conduct proliferate, shielded by anonymity and without visible consequences.

In these digital spaces, anonymous users launch direct accusations against women, while the groups where this content is disseminated continue to operate without control, despite the fact that their administrators may have access to the real profiles of those who perpetrate this type of aggression.

Although in Quintana Roo there are institutions created to address gender-based violence, such as the Secretariat of Women, headed by Esther Burgos Jiménez, in practice no decisive actions are observed to curb this phenomenon in municipalities like José María Morelos, where the problem persists openly.

Similarly, groups that publicly assume themselves as defenders of women’s rights, such as Marea Verde or Foráneas Seguras, have avoided speaking out on these specific cases, omitting clear positions regarding what constitutes digital violence under current legislation.

This outlet sought the official position of the Secretariat of Women; through its Social Communication area, it was only informed that there is a support line for women who have experienced violence, with legal advice and psychological care available for those who request the service.

Likewise, an interview was requested with Karen Secundino Vivas, in charge of the Secretariat of Women office in José María Morelos, with the aim of learning what actions are being taken or could be implemented against those who denigrate women on social networks; however, by the close of this information, no official response was obtained.
