Playa del Carmen, Mexico — The migrant shelter located in the Puerto Aventuras borough will undergo a series of improvements to optimize its operations, according to Claudia Mendoza, director of the Migrant Assistance Unit. Although the facility is currently in good condition, authorities have identified key areas for upgrades during a recent inspection tour.
Key Renovations Planned
The planned improvements include remodeling the kitchen and bedrooms, where ceiling fans will be installed to enhance comfort for residents. Additionally, the roof has already been waterproofed, and video surveillance cameras have been added to bolster security. Mendoza also confirmed that the women's and children's restroom will soon be renovated.
Shelter Usage and Capacity
Since the beginning of the current administration, the shelter has accommodated 56 migrants. So far in 2025, 20 individuals have been served, with seven arriving in May alone. The facility has a total capacity of 60 people.
The upgrades aim to ensure better living conditions for migrants while maintaining the shelter's operational efficiency.
