Transport Workers Sanctioned After Highway Clash in Quintana Roo

Public transport drivers involved in an altercation on the Tulum-Playa del Carmen highway

Quintana Roo, Mexico — The Institute of Mobility of the State of Quintana Roo (IMOVEQROO) has imposed administrative sanctions on public transport drivers following a road altercation on the Tulum-Playa del Carmen highway, promoting greater safety in public transportation.

A confrontation recorded on Federal Highway 307, on the Tulum-Playa del Carmen stretch, led to the imposition of sanctions by IMOVEQROO. After an investigation, the drivers involved in the fight were identified. The incident occurred in a public roadway and was widely disseminated on social media.

The incident involved operators from the UNTRAC group and the Tiburones del Caribe Taxi Union, who clashed over a dispute related to passenger allocation, a frequent problem in tourist areas with high transportation demand. During the altercation, some passengers attempted to intervene, while others remained silent, evidencing the tension generated at that moment and the temporary impact on vehicular traffic on one of the most traveled routes of the Riviera Maya.

After the corresponding actions, authorities confirmed the 30-day suspension of the responsible drivers and the retention of the license plates of the involved units, a measure that seeks to reinforce safety and order in the region’s public transport. The sanction was formally communicated to the leaders of the participating organizations and will be applied according to current mobility regulations.

IMOVEQROO reaffirmed its commitment to road safety and compliance with the law, warning that any violent and irresponsible behavior by operators will be firmly sanctioned. The authority seeks to guarantee dignified, safe, and inclusive public transportation for residents and tourists in Quintana Roo, in a context where transportation safety is fundamental for tourism development and the state’s image.

As context, this type of incident reflects the importance of maintaining professionalization and strict regulation in a key sector for the local economy. The trend to reinforce sanctions and promote peaceful coexistence on public roads responds to a governmental priority that seeks to prevent future conflicts and improve the perception of safety in mobility services.
