Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Hyrox Cancún 2026 fitness competition, drawing 10,000 participants from 16 countries, is facing criticism for operating as a private, elitist event that charges spectators and blocks press access.
The second day of the competition took place on the Malecón Tajamar, filling the area with structures and fitness challenges. Despite its international scale and appeal to fitness enthusiasts, the event is closed to the press, and residents and tourists must pay to watch the competitions.
Critics argue the event prioritizes economic gains and hotel occupancy over promoting sports. Juan Pablo de Zulueta, the tourism secretary overseeing the event, did not accredit the press or allow sports authorities to do so.
The competition, held over the March 13-15 weekend, aims to boost tourist occupancy in the city and benefit international organizers, who charge general admission. Locals complain it has taken over a public family space during a holiday weekend for an exclusive private event.
The event features an 8-kilometer running circuit combined with eight functional exercise stations testing strength, endurance, and strategy. Participants start in waves of 40 athletes every 10 minutes. As the first outdoor edition, areas are strategically covered to provide sun protection, security, and suitable conditions for athletes and attendees.
The challenges include SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jumps, rowing ergometer, Farmer’s Carry, Sandbag Lunges, and Wall Balls.
