Humanitarian Aid Ship to Depart Mexico for Cuba as Part of International Convoy

A ship loaded with humanitarian aid prepares to depart from Mexico to Cuba

Progreso, Yucatan — A ship carrying humanitarian aid will depart from the port of Progreso in Yucatan on Thursday, heading to Cuba as part of the international mission ‘Convoy Nuestra América’ in support of the island nation.

The vessel is backed by the Global Sumud Flotilla, which in 2025 traveled to the Gaza Strip to deliver humanitarian aid and included activist Greta Thunberg, who is supporting this mission. Additionally, three other boats will set sail from Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, on March 20 to join the convoy, which plans to arrive in Cuba on March 21.

In a statement on its official website, the mission described the effort as “an unprecedented international solidarity initiative” aimed at delivering “vital supplies” to help the Cuban people “cope with the inhumane economic and energy blockade of the island.”

“We are mobilizing toward Cuba, bringing critical humanitarian aid to its people. The Trump administration is suffocating the island, cutting off fuel supplies, flights, and essential goods for survival,” the statement said. “The consequences of the U.S. siege are lethal for newborns and parents, the elderly, and the sick.”

The mission added that it is “preparing the Convoy Nuestra América to Cuba, mobilizing by air, land, and sea in solidarity with the Cuban people.” Organizers explained that since its launch, they have received “overwhelming support from communities around the world committed to breaking the U.S. criminal blockade.” They noted that the mission is “historic” and has expanded “from a small flotilla to a global convoy that will converge in Havana.”

“There is no time to waste as the Trump administration intensifies its offensive against the island and its campaign to isolate its people… together we can break the siege, save lives, and defend the cause of Cuba’s self-determination,” the statement continued.

According to plans, the ship departing from Progreso will transport several tons of food, essential medicines, hygiene products, and solar panels.

On Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced she would make a personal financial donation to Cuba, following a recent call from former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024). She reiterated that the Mexican government’s aid to the island is a matter of “fraternity.”

“Mexico was the only country that opposed the blockade against Cuba amid all pressures, the only one. A light on the horizon. Mexico has always been supportive of the Cuban people, always, a brotherly people. This is an issue of fraternity. Mexico is a fraternal people that always extends a hand to those who suffer,” Sheinbaum said during her daily press conference.

Last Friday, Sheinbaum welcomed the rapprochement between Cuba and the United States and reiterated that her government will continue to promote diplomatic dialogue and support the Cuban people amid renewed tensions between Washington and Havana.

On February 28, two Mexican Navy ships docked in Havana Bay with a second package of humanitarian aid for the island, consisting of 1,200 tons of food sent to alleviate the country’s crisis, worsened by the U.S. oil siege.
