Stop Unfair Fare Hikes in Cancún! Imoveqroo Hotline Launched

A white inspection vehicle labeled "INSPECCIÓN 018" from the mobility institute of Quintana Roo is parked next to a public transport van on a sunny day.

The Mobility Institute of Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo) has launched a series of measures to address public complaints about unauthorized increases in public transport fares. This move follows a threat from the Cancún transport union to raise fares by 50% starting from Friday, August 23. The proposed increase would see fares in the regular area rise from $10 to $15 pesos, and in the hotel area from $12 to $17 pesos – an increase of $5.00 pesos. Inspectors have issued a statement that the fare increase has not been authorized, and they have urged the public to report any fare-related abuses to Imoveqroo through official channels.

Imoveqroo has dispatched teams to high-traffic areas in Playa del Carmen and Cancún to monitor transport units and ensure that unauthorized fares are not being charged. Inspectors are also informing the public about the unauthorized fare increase and advising them on how to report any abuses.

Imoveqroo has warned that transport operators who charge unauthorized fares will face severe penalties. These can range from 151 to 700 Units of Measure and Update (UMAS), equivalent to fines between $16,394 and $475,999 pesos. Penalties could also include the revocation of operating licenses, as per article 122, section X, of the Mobility Law. To make it easier for the public to report abuses, Imoveqroo has set up a complaint hotline via WhatsApp at the number 983 185 3403.

These operations are not just about preventing unauthorized fare increases, but also about ensuring the safety of public transport users and making sure that operators are complying with the law. So far, over 80 transport units in Playa del Carmen and Cancún have been inspected, with at least 10 being penalized for violating the Mobility Law, including charging altered fares. Other units have been penalized for operating in poor condition or without valid insurance, resulting in these units being impounded, as per articles 194, 198 and 199 of the Mobility Law.
