Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo — A horse was struck and killed by a sedan on Federal Highway 307 early Wednesday, leaving the vehicle overturned in roadside brush and causing a traffic jam that stretched for miles toward Cancún.
The crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. near the junction with the Ruta de los Cenotes. After the collision, the car ran off the road and flipped. The horse’s body came to rest on the highway’s high-speed lane, blocking the flow of vehicles heading toward Cancún.
At first, drivers were forced to steer around the carcass with no warning signs or flaggers. The line of cars quickly grew to several kilometers.
Police and rescue crews eventually arrived, checked on the driver, who was uninjured, and arranged for tow trucks to remove both the overturned vehicle and the horse.
