Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo — A man experiencing homelessness was found deceased inside an abandoned property on streets near the tourist zone in the first block of the city of Playa del Carmen.

On Friday afternoon, a male individual entered a construction site located on 10th Avenue between 12th and 14th Streets North. He was surprised to see a subject who appeared to be asleep, but upon approaching, he realized the individual showed no signs of life. He quickly exited the location to seek help.

Tourist Police officers arrived at the scene and attempted to “wake” the individual, corroborating that he had no vital signs. They immediately called an ambulance from ERUM. Paramedics confirmed that the person had died. Preliminary causes indicate the death was due to electrocution, as the body was found near the property’s electrical installation. It is presumed that while attempting to remove cables to obtain copper, the individual came into contact with a live current, resulting in a fatal electric shock.

Ministerial Police also arrived at the location and began corresponding investigations. The unit of forensic services was responsible for removing the body to transport it to the Playa del Carmen Medical Forensic Service (Semefo) for a legally required autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

The individual remains unidentified, as he was a person experiencing homelessness and was not carrying any identification.
