Holbox Flooding Persists Despite Sanitation Work

Flooded streets in Holbox after light rain

Holbox, Quintana Roo — Despite ongoing environmental sanitation work to level the streets of Holbox Island, positive results have yet to materialize, according to José Cruz Reyes, a tourism service provider and marquesitas vendor.

Last weekend, a light rain recorded overnight left several streets flooded, a situation that, according to Cruz Reyes, gives a poor image to tourists visiting the island to enjoy its natural beauty.

“Everything indicates that, due to the characteristics of Holbox Island, we cannot fight against Mother Nature; naturally, the streets return to their normal state,” commented the tourism service provider. He noted that this phenomenon has intensified recently because cold fronts often come accompanied by rain.

Holbox is considered the economic engine of the communities of Lázaro Cárdenas, as during the high season it generates jobs not only for locals but also for residents of the neighboring state of Yucatán, Cruz Reyes highlighted.

Local and foreign tourism could be affected if permanent solutions are not found for recurrent rains.
