Holbox Hosts 5th Annual Don Naín Moguel Ordaz Fishing Tournament

Holbox, Quintana Roo – Isla Holbox came alive this past weekend with the 5th annual Torneo de Pesca Don Naín Moguel Ordaz, a fishing event that’s quickly become one of the most celebrated of its kind in Quintana Roo, the Yucatán Peninsula, and the Mexican Caribbean. Held in honor of Holbox’s beloved Don Naín Moguel Ordaz—and coinciding with his birthday—the two-day tournament blended fierce competition with heartfelt community pride.

More than 30 boats took to the turquoise waters, competing in both Altura (offshore) and Ribereña (coastal) categories for over 900,000 pesos in prizes, plus special jackpots of 220,000 pesos and 40,000 pesos.

In the Altura category, the top prize went to the Chanokkk from Progreso, Yucatán, captained by Gerardo Gari, scoring an impressive 1,679 points. The team took home a brand-new Mazda and 220,000 pesos in cash. The Ribereña category was won by Arturo Montejo’s Mister Carlitos, earning a quad bike and 10,000 pesos.

The event wrapped with an awards ceremony led by Secretary of Government Cristina Torres and Lázaro Cárdenas Municipal President Nivardo Mena, celebrating not only the winners but also Holbox’s deep fishing traditions. For the Moguel family, it was a tribute in life to a man whose name is synonymous with the island’s history, spirit, and love for the sea.
