Holbox Businesses and Residents Urge Review of Street Closures

A quiet street on Holbox island in Quintana Roo, Mexico, where residents and businesses are asking authorities to review access restrictions

Holbox, Quintana Roo — Business owners and residents on Holbox are asking authorities to review access restrictions that have kept several avenues on the island closed for months, blocking the circulation of taxis and motorcycles.

They say the measure has complicated commercial activity and prevented vehicles that provide basic services from reaching the area.

According to affected merchants, profits at businesses in the zone have fallen and some establishments have chosen to close altogether. They are calling for better mobility strategies that address the needs of people who work and live in the area.

Residents also reported difficulties for garbage collection trucks and vehicles that deliver groceries and supplies to local shops. They said entry conditions should be established for those services so the restrictions do not disrupt their operations.

Another concern is access for vehicles during an emergency or contingency. Neighbors asked that any traffic control plan include accessible routes so that situations posing a risk to the population can be handled promptly.

The group noted that streets are spaces for common use and urged authorities to find a quick solution that brings order to traffic without cutting off access to businesses, homes and essential services.
