Cancún, Quintana Roo — A woman was shot dead Sunday night while riding a motorcycle with her two young children in the Bellavista neighborhood, steps from the busy Plaza Las Américas, authorities said.

The attack took place at the intersection of Avenidas 38 and Chemuyil. According to initial investigators’ findings, the victim was traveling through the area as usual when two suspected gunmen on a second motorcycle intercepted her. Without saying a word, the passenger drew a firearm and fired a burst of rounds at close range, striking her.

The woman fell onto the asphalt beside her motorcycle, while the attackers sped away in an unknown direction.

The gunfire immediately alarmed nearby residents, who called the 911 emergency line, triggering a “Red Code” alert across the municipality.

Municipal Preventive Police officers and paramedics rushed to the scene, but medics could only confirm that the woman had no vital signs because of the severity of the wounds she suffered to vital parts of her body.

The two children riding with her escaped the shooting unharmed. After receiving medical evaluations, they were placed in the custody of the Specialized Group for Attention to Family and Gender Violence (GEAVIM), which was tasked with protecting their physical safety.

Officers cordoned off the crime scene with yellow tape, backed by the Mexican Army, which helped secure the perimeter.

The victim’s husband arrived at the scene amid the shock. Authorities took him to the Public Ministry so he could give an initial statement about what happened.

Investigative police officers and forensic specialists from the State Prosecutor’s Office (FGE) processed the scene, collecting and identifying several spent shell casings. After documenting the evidence, personnel from the Forensic Medical Service removed the body and formally opened the corresponding investigation file.
