Cancún, Quintana Roo — The Guelaguetza, one of Mexico’s most celebrated cultural festivals, will arrive in Cancún in August 2025, bringing the vibrant traditions of Oaxaca to the shores of Quintana Roo. Known for its colorful dances, music, and communal spirit, the event will feature performances by multiple Oaxacan delegations, offering residents and tourists alike a taste of the state’s rich heritage.
A Celebration of Tradition and Unity
Originating in Oaxaca as part of the religious devotions to the Virgen del Carmen, the Guelaguetza symbolizes cooperation, generosity, and the sharing of traditions among the Zapotec people. Recognized as the largest folkloric festival in the Americas, it attracts thousands of visitors annually to Oaxaca. Now, Cancún will host its own iteration, showcasing the same spirit through dance, music, and crafts.
Dates, Venue, and Highlights
The Benito Juárez municipal government confirmed that the Guelaguetza 2025 festivities will take place from Friday, August 1, to Sunday, August 3. The celebrations will kick off with the traditional Calenda parade at 6:00 p.m., starting at the Monumento al Ceviche and concluding at Parque de las Palapas, the event’s main venue.
Eight dance troupes from Oaxaca will perform, accompanied by the Oaxaca Youth and Children’s Philharmonic Orchestra. Among the featured dances are those from Pinotepa Nacional, the Danza de las Piñas, and performances from Juchitán.
Mascot Contest Inspired by Oaxacan Icon
Organizers announced a contest to select an official mascot for the Cancún Guelaguetza, drawing inspiration from Perro Mazapán, Oaxaca’s beloved cultural symbol. Participants are encouraged to dress their dogs in traditional attire and floral decorations, with the winning entry becoming the festival’s representative figure.
The event aims to replicate the essence of Oaxaca’s original celebration, highlighting regional music, dance, food, and artisanal crafts. More than ten traditional dances will be performed, reinforcing the cultural ties between Oaxaca and Quintana Roo.
