Cozumel, Quintana Roo — The Fundación de Parques y Museos de Cozumel (FPMC) has opened “La Magia del Camafeo en Vidrio,” the first solo exhibition by artist Greg Dietrich, drawing a packed crowd to the Sala de Exposiciones Temporales II at the Museo de la Isla.

The show brings together a decade of Dietrich’s work, including 58 pieces made using the glass cameo technique and a large-format painting on silk. He is currently the only artist working in glass cameo on the island.

Glass cameo is a precision technique in which two or more layers of colored glass are worked with diamond wheels, carefully removing material to reveal figures, reliefs and fine details. Officials said the complexity of the process and Dietrich’s command of it make his work a distinctive entry in Cozumel’s art scene.

The exhibition also features a large-format silk painting created specifically for the gallery: a colorful underwater scene spread across seven canvases that together form a single composition.

The opening was led by Isela Carrillo Cupul, director of the Museo de la Isla; Alejandro Queb Franco, an FPMC councilor; and museographer Satoko Kitamura. The three presented the artist with a recognition for his career and his contribution to art on the island.

Dietrich said he was pleased by the public’s response and by the chance to share pieces that represent years of work. He added that it is especially meaningful to him that visitors can learn about the technique, examine its details and connect with each of his creations.
