Mérida, Yucatán — In the north of the city of Mérida, a venue has worked to establish itself as a space for the dissemination and conservation of Maya culture, and on December 21 it celebrates 13 years with a program that also marks the National Day of Maya Culture.
The Gran Museo del Mundo Maya de Mérida reaches its 13th anniversary with the inauguration of In Chuuy, a shop for artisanal embroidery that promotes fair trade with artisans from 22 municipalities.
Furthermore, during this Saturday and Sunday, free activities will take place that include the performance of the Dance of Abraham and Isaac, the temporary exhibition Guadalupe-Reyes, and the show by Juumil Wayak’, a Maya rap group.
“We have worked to attract audiences, democratize culture, make it free, and have the museum seen as a living, dynamic, and inhabited space,” commented Julián Dzul Nah, director of the venue.
Under the motto Sky, Music and Time, the celebration is diverse: exhibition, artisanal bazaar, thematic tours, discussion panels, children’s activities, cumbia, and even dancing.
“We want to show the vitality that the museum has through Maya culture in all its manifestations, from the legacy left to us through the stones, but also through the blood that runs in our veins and that manifests in the children, the youth who will be present here in all that we are doing,” declared Fidencio Briceño Chel, general director of Museums and Heritage in Yucatán.
Briceño Chel highlighted that the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya is an open space for all audiences where it is intended that all manifestations of heritage be present.
