Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo — The Caminos Ancestrales paintings are a project that promotes cultural identity, history, and community tourism in the heart of the Maya zone of Quintana Roo.

Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa accompanied Mayor Mary Hernández on a tour of streets and murals in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, where they verified the progress of the Caminos Ancestrales project, an initiative that seeks to rescue historical memory, strengthen cultural identity, and transform public space with a social and inclusive vision.

During the walk, both authorities agreed that this project represents a new way of making a city, putting the community, art, and local history at the center.

INSPIRED BY SAFE PATHWAYS WITH AN INTEGRAL FOCUS

The authorities highlighted that Caminos Ancestrales is inspired by the Safe Pathways, promoted nationally by President Claudia Sheinbaum, and that in Felipe Carrillo Puerto it is adapted to an integral model that combines urban art, security, mobility, and community tourism.

This focus allows not only beautifying the city but also generating safer, more accessible, and attractive spaces for both inhabitants and visitors.

MURALS THAT NARRATE THE HISTORY AND CULTURE OF THE MUNICIPALITY

Mayor Mary Hernández explained that this is the first stage of the project, with continuity planned for 2026. Currently, work is being done on the muralization of historical figures from the Caste War, as well as scenes that represent the history, gastronomy, culture, and daily life of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

She emphasized that this effort is part of the Fourth Transformation, where the resources of the people return to the people, allowing Maya Ka’an to continue strengthening as a cultural and touristic reference.

70% ADVANCE IN URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE

Mary Hernández reported that the project records an approximate advance of 70 percent, with the installation of intelligent traffic lights, safe pedestrian crossings, and velaria-type lighting, actions that improve mobility and security in the intervened zone.

Furthermore, she highlighted that the murals are being carried out by Carrilloportense artists, who leave a cultural legacy in their own city through coordinated work between the State Government, the City Council, and the citizenry.

As part of the participatory focus, an open call was launched for the population to propose which Carrilloportense women should be honored in the next murals that will be carried out in the City Theater, fostering community co-creation and recognition of the role of women in local history.

MARA LEZAMA BACKS THE PROJECT AND RECOGNIZES MUNICIPAL LEADERSHIP

For her part, Governor Mara Lezama recognized the leadership of Mary Hernández and celebrated that Caminos Ancestrales not only consolidates as a new touristic attraction but as a way to keep alive the history of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, marked by the resistance, pain, and greatness of indigenous cultures.

“These ancestral pathways tell who we are, honor our people, and put the community and tourism with a human face at the center,” expressed the Governor, while reiterating her backing for actions that strengthen the municipality as one of the most important cultural destinations of Quintana Roo and the country.

The tour concluded with a call for unity, to continue transforming Felipe Carrillo Puerto and consolidate the Caminos Ancestrales as a space of memory, identity, and pride for the Carrilloportenses.
